Dry Needling: What It Is and When It Helps

At Brighton Physiotherapy, we often see clients with stubborn aches, tight muscles, or pain that just doesn’t seem to ease. For many of these cases, dry needling can be an effective treatment option – either on its own or as part of a broader physiotherapy or myotherapy plan.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into tight or sensitive areas of muscle known as trigger points. Unlike acupuncture (which is based on traditional Chinese medicine), dry needling is grounded in modern anatomy and science, focusing on releasing muscle tension and restoring normal movement.

When the needle is inserted, the muscle often produces a small “twitch” response. This is a good sign – it means the muscle is relaxing and the treatment is working.

What are the benefits of dry needling?

Dry needling can help with:

  • Reducing pain and muscle tension
  • Improving flexibility and movement
  • Supporting recovery after injury or surgery
  • Enhancing performance by allowing muscles to work more efficiently

Because it targets trigger points directly, many people find relief quickly – often after just a few sessions.

When is dry needling used?

At Brighton Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists and myotherapist may use dry needling for a range of conditions, including:

  • Neck and shoulder pain, including tension headaches
  • Lower back pain and stiffness
  • Sports-related muscle strains or tightness
  • Chronic pain conditions such as tendinopathy
  • Postural issues leading to tight muscles

Often, dry needling is used alongside other treatments such as manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, or education. This combined approach helps ensure your pain relief lasts and your movement patterns improve.

Your personalised program

Every client we see receives a treatment plan tailored to their needs. If dry needling is right for you, we’ll explain how it works, what to expect during your appointment, and how it fits into your overall care. You may also be given a personalised exercise program through Physitrack, which we project onto our large in-room TVs so we can walk you through each movement step by step.

This way, your in-clinic treatment is reinforced by exercises you can confidently perform at home.
